Mississippi Forestry Commission requests help from other states to fight wildfires
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Forestry Commission (MFC) has requested help from other states to combat wildfires due to the extended drought in Mississippi. The Florida Forest Service has sent engine and dozer strike teams, and more assistance is expected from Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, and possibly other states. Local, state, and federal resources, including the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and various national park services, are also being utilized. Governor Tate Reeves has extended the burn ban proclamation, with 45 counties currently under a burn ban. Since August 1, the MFC has responded to over 760 fires that have burned more than 14,163 acres.

SUMMARY: A missing man, Kenneth Walters, 43, was found deceased in a wooded area near a gravel pit in Forrest County on October 2. According to Coroner Lisa Klem, no foul play is suspected in his death. Walters had last been seen on August 27 at Keith’s Superstore in Moselle, reportedly heading to work but never arriving. His last cellphone location was pinged on Morrow Road between Purvis and Hattiesburg. Family members had reported him missing after he failed to return home.

SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Milton is expected to become a hurricane on Sunday and potentially reach Category 3 strength by midweek, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.
