Mississippi sees record number of AP students in 2023-23 school year
SUMMARY: The number of Mississippi students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams has reached a record high for the 2022-23 school year, with over 12,000 public school students taking nearly 17,000 AP exams. The number of exams that earned a qualifying score also hit a record-breaking total of 5,860. This marks a 14.3 percent increase in students taking AP exams compared to the previous year, as well as increases in the number of tests taken and exams with qualifying scores. Hispanic and African-American students achieved the greatest gains, with significant increases in qualifying scores for both groups. The overall pass rate on AP exams among all Mississippi students has also increased over the past decade. Mississippi has implemented a statewide AP credit policy that allows students to earn college credits at public universities or community colleges for qualifying scores on AP exams, reducing the cost of attending college. The Mississippi State Board of Education requires high schools to offer and enroll students in advanced courses, including AP classes in core subject areas. Funding is available to cover the cost of AP exam fees for low-income students.
