Burn ban continues for many parts of state

SUMMARY: Authorities in Copiah County, Mississippi are urging residents to exercise caution due to a recent forest fire that burned 45 acres. The fire was reportedly caused by a 4-wheeler backfiring. As a result, a burn ban has been imposed across the southern half of the state. The Mississippi Forestry Commission has responded to more than 700 fires, burning over 14,000 acres, since August. Local resources are stretched thin, and officials have noticed an increase in intentionally set fires. Residents are reminded not to burn trash piles, as citations have been issued for illegal burning.

Forrest County firefighters have seen an increase in fires outside city limits.
