MHP responds to 4 fatal crashes during Labor Day weekend
SUMMARY: During the 2023 Labor Day Holiday Travel Period, the Mississippi Highway Patrol investigated 147 crashes, including four fatal crashes that resulted in four deaths. The fatal crashes occurred in Hinds, Lamar, and Leake counties. Troopers issued 9,186 citations and made 141 arrests for impaired driving, as well as cited 698 drivers for occupant restraint violations. In comparison to 2022, there were slightly fewer crashes and DUIs, but a higher number of citations for occupant restraint violations.

Isolated showers tomorrow with increasing storms next week – Home – WCBI TV
SUMMARY: COLUMBUS, Mississippi (WCBI) – Saturday ends calmly with clouds increasing overnight. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a few isolated showers, hot and muggy conditions, and temperatures reaching low to mid-90s with heat indices in the triple digits. Tonight's weather will be warm and mild with temperatures around the mid-70s and winds from the NNW at 5 mph. Heading into next week, expect more thunderstorms and slightly cooler temperatures, with some areas experiencing upper 80s.

Two Mississippi escapees captured after being found in abandoned home
SUMMARY: Two inmates who escaped from Claiborne County Detention Center, Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, were captured on July 6 in an abandoned home on Bridewell Lane. They escaped on July 5 by going through the ceiling and climbing an outside wall; Johnson injured his leg during the escape. Collins is accused of killing his cousin in Copiah County in October 2023. Johnson faces murder and aggravated assault charges in Jefferson County, with a trial set for October 15, 2024. Camera footage aided in tracking them down. Drier and calm weekend ahead – Home – WCBI TV
SUMMARY: After storms with a cold front, northeast Mississippi will experience dry and clear weather this weekend. Saturday and Sunday will see high temperatures in the lower 90s, with partly to mostly cloudy skies and low chances (20%) of isolated showers. Night temperatures will drop to the low to mid-70s, creating warm and muggy conditions, and heat indices could exceed 100. Next week, remnants of Beryl will impact the area, likely bringing rainy days and potentially gusty winds from Tuesday to Thursday. Beryl is expected to weaken into a tropical depression as it moves inland, passing near the area by mid-week.
