Two arrested after fraudulent check investigation
SUMMARY: Christy Gomez and James Clark, two individuals from Jones County, are accused of writing fraudulent checks from businesses inside and outside of the county. They allegedly used check software and would dumpster dive at businesses to obtain account numbers. The Jones County Sheriff’s Department received a tip in December, leading to a search warrant in January. Several fraudulent checks and a computer with check software were found. Officials say the two individuals would use the obtained account numbers for fraudulent purposes.

SUMMARY: Elijah Atkisson was convicted of aggravated DUI for the 2020 drunk driving death of Marcel Walker. Despite a seven-day trial, the jury took just 30 minutes to reach a guilty verdict. Prosecutors presented evidence that Atkisson’s blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when he crashed into Walker’s car on I-20, causing a fiery explosion. Atkisson’s defense claimed it was a mistake, not intoxication. Walker’s family expressed relief after the verdict, with his uncle noting the long wait for justice. Atkisson will remain in jail until his sentencing on December 9th.

SUMMARY: Starting Monday, the Highway 80 bridge across the Pearl River will close for major repairs, impacting drivers in Hinds and Rankin counties. MDOT will replace three massive girders as part of a $9 million project. This work coincides with ongoing I-55 lane closures, causing additional traffic congestion. Local businesses, such as Van Life, are concerned about the impact on customer access and shipments. Drivers are advised to find alternative routes, though some local drivers are familiar with detours. The I-55 project is expected to be completed early next year, but the bridge repairs may take up to nine months.
