Mississippi Insight for August 27, 2023: One on one with John Horhn
SUMMARY: Senator John Horn, a Democrat from District 26 in Mississippi, is interviewed about election year politics, legislative prospects, and the direction of the state’s Democratic party. There are several contested supervisor and local legislative races, but no statewide races heading into the primary runoffs. Horn praises Lieutenant Governor-elect Delbert Hosemann as a visionary leader who governs by listening to both Democrats and Republicans. Horn believes the governor’s race between Republican Tate Reeves and Democrat Brandon Presley will be closer than some people expect, noting that 22% of likely Republican voters said they would vote for Presley in the general election. He also highlights the importance of increasing Presley’s name recognition in the black community.
The Democratic senator for District 26 in Hinds and Madison counties sits down with 12 News’ Byron Brown about state elections, legislative prospects and the future of the Mississippi Democratic Party. Also, Madison’s mayor files suit against three county supervisors over rezoning. Produced by Tom Wright.

Jackson police work to solve recent homicides
SUMMARY: The Jackson Police Department (JPD) has solved the two latest homicides, making three arrests within 24 hours, with a fourth pending. Police Chief Joseph Wade attributes the 80% solvability rate to a new focused approach that prioritizes witness statements, physical evidence, and technology. He emphasizes accountability for violent crimes, aided by new federal resources after Jackson was designated a public safety partnership city. While crime rates have declined, Wade stresses the importance of community involvement and judicial reform, advocating for stricter bail for violent offenders to bolster crime-fighting efforts.
