Two Coast school districts get top marks in state academic assessment

West Wortham students learn about environmental education

SUMMARY: Hurricane Helen strengthened into a category 2 hurricane with maximum winds of 105 mph, moving north-northeast at 14 mph. Forecasters predict it will make landfall in Florida as a major hurricane with winds up to 120 mph. The wind field covers vast areas: hurricane-force winds extend around 100 miles, while tropical storm-force winds reach up to 500 miles. The most intense winds are expected near the landfall zone between Apalachicola and Cedar Key. Additionally, storm surge hazards could reach 20 feet, primarily affecting areas east of the Mississippi Coast, where significant rainfall is also anticipated.
Helene is forecast to hit Florida as a major storm by Thursday night. The Mississippi Coast is expecting no direct impacts.
