FEMA representatives coming to storm-affected areas
SUMMARY: FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance teams and home inspectors will be assisting survivors of major disasters and severe weather in Jackson and Jasper counties. FEMA’s DSA teams are going door-to-door in these areas to help residents that want to apply for federal assistance and answer any disaster assistance-related questions. Meanwhile, home inspectors will be scheduling checks for damage. Other disaster recovery personnel may also be present but they are not associated with FEMA’s disaster assistance application process. Assistance can also be sought online or by calling FEMA’s helpline.

84% of Mississippi 3rd graders pass reading assessment for 2023-24 school year
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education announced that 84% of third graders passed the 2023-24 reading assessment, slightly down from 84.9% in the previous year. However, a record 57.7% achieved proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA), continuing a positive trend since 2016. The Literacy-Based Promotion Act requires third graders to score at least Level 3 to be promoted to fourth grade, with support for schools focusing on high-quality materials and Science of Reading training. Students can attempt the test three times, and those who do not pass may be retained unless qualifying for certain exemptions.
