Prep Football Preview 2023: D’Iberville heads into uncharted waters in the new Class 7A
SUMMARY: D’Iberville High School’s football team is looking to bounce back this season after missing the state playoffs for the second time in five years. Under the direction of former Warrior standout Josh Ladner, the team finished with a 4-7 overall record last season. This year, D’Iberville will move up to Class 7A from Class 6A due to the expansion of the Mississippi High School Activities Association. The team will compete in the newly named Region 4-7A alongside five familiar foes. D’Iberville’s season kicks off on August 25th against Columbia.

SUMMARY: Montrell Chapman, a sophomore linebacker from Batesville, has been named Bulldog of the Week for Sept. 9-15 after contributing 10 tackles, including one for loss, in No. 5 Gulf Coast’s 27-20 victory over No. 10 Jones. His interception concluded Jones’s final drive and helped limit the opponent to 207 total yards. Other nominees included freshman quarterback Landon Varnes, who threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, leading a comeback win, and sophomore JP Coulter, who recorded nine receptions for 118 yards and returned three punts for 45 yards. SUMMARY: St. Martin’s football team showcased their resilience with a 22-21 overtime victory against Hancock. Seth Crockett led the charge with 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns, helping St. Martin maintain a 15-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Hancock fought back, tying the game late, but in overtime, Dax Hill’s touchdown and successful extra point put St. Martin ahead. Hancock then scored but was denied a two-point conversion, sealing the win for St. Martin.
