SUMMARY: Mississippi 811, a non-profit organization, is reminding homeowners and contractors to call 811 before digging to avoid hitting buried utility cables. August 11 is designated as “811 Day” in Mississippi to raise awareness about the importance of calling before digging. Calling 811 allows utility companies to mark the ground with cables within three business days to prevent damage. Damage to underground utilities is mostly done by homeowners, and they are responsible for the costs of repair or replacement if they damage a utility line during a project. This can amount to thousands of dollars.
