Guest-authored bill barring DHS from using drones made by foreign adversaries passes House
SUMMARY: The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill that would prohibit the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from using drones made in countries designated as foreign adversaries, amid threats from China. The bill, called the Unmanned Aerial Security Act, aims to mitigate security risks by ensuring that drones used by the DHS are not manufactured by countries like China, who have been known to steal American technology and information. Lawmakers are growing increasingly concerned about foreign adversaries spying on America, and the bill will now move to the Senate for consideration.

Lawmaker eyeing certificate of need reform to improve Mississippi’s healthcare
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers aim to reform the state’s certificate of need (CON) laws as a response to ongoing healthcare challenges, particularly after Medicaid expansion efforts stalled. With a new federal administration on the horizon, legislators are shifting focus away from Medicaid to CON law reforms, led by State Rep. Sam Creekmore. He proposes a “common sense” measure to reduce government oversight, allowing hospitals more autonomy in adding services like outpatient dialysis. Though critics highlight the lengthy and costly CON application process, Creekmore emphasizes maintaining protections for rural hospitals while encouraging competition and enhancing care access for Mississippians.

Social Security benefits to increase, food stamps to decrease for thousands of Mississippians
SUMMARY: Beneficiaries of federal programs like Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Veterans Benefits, and Railroad Retirement will receive a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment starting in 2025, reflecting changes in the Consumer Price Index from Q3 2023 to Q3 2024. However, increases in these benefits may result in reduced aid for households using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Beneficiaries must report any income changes monthly, as increases could diminish or terminate SNAP assistance. Additionally, individuals can request a fair hearing for any discrepancies in benefits calculations.
