Health professionals warn excessive heat can be dangerous
SUMMARY: The Southeast is experiencing a heat wave, leaving those without power from Sunday night’s storms at risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when the body overheats, and the first sign is a lack of sweating. Heat exhaustion, which precedes heat stroke, can be identified by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and dry skin. Staying hydrated with water or sports drinks is important, while caffeine should be avoided. Cooling methods include using box fans, taking cold showers or baths, and placing cold compresses on areas near blood vessels. If heat stroke is suspected, calling 911 is crucial.
