Gunn touts advancements in education as highlight of speakership
SUMMARY: Philip Gunn, Mississippi’s first Republican House speaker since Reconstruction, is highlighting the state‘s education improvements as the highlight of his tenure. Under his leadership, the state passed the Literacy-Based Promotion Act, which has led to significant improvements in third-grade literacy rates. Prior to the legislation, only 64% of third-graders could read on a third-grade level, but now that number has increased to over 90%. Mississippi’s fourth-graders also achieved the No. 1 spot in the nation for gains in reading and mathematics, a first in state history. Additionally, the state passed its largest-ever teacher pay raise, exceeding both the southeastern and national averages in starting pay.
