Mississippi welfare fraud lawsuit grows to include more names, Favre

The University of Southern Mississippi Wellness Center in Hattiesburg was funded in part by welfare money. The state is looking to recover those funds through a new lawsuit.

The University of Southern Mississippi Athletic Foundation is one of 10 parties the Mississippi Department of Human Services is seeking to sue in an expanding lawsuit that it hopes will recoup millions of dollars of welfare funds lost in the largest public fraud in state history.

Southern Miss is linked to the alleged fraud scheme through one of its most notable alums, former Golden Eagles quarterback and pro football hall of famer Brett Favre, who is mentioned directly in the amended complaint to the lawsuit.

Southern Miss men’s basketball is heading to the NIT for the first time since 2014.

The Golden Eagles will face UAB in the first round of the 2023 NIT on Tuesday (6:30 p.m., ESPN+), having learned their postseason fate Sunday.

Coach Jay Ladner – the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year – guided Southern Miss (25-7) to its third regular-season conference championship and first since 2000-01. The regular-season title clinched an automatic bid for the Golden Eagles despite a 78-61 quarterfinals loss to South Alabama in the conference tournament March 4.
