SUMMARY: Rain has recently fallen, with some areas receiving 1-2 inches in a severe thunderstorm, a trend expected to continue into the week, alleviating severe drought conditions. Though a heat advisory is in place, rain chances are elevated. Temperatures in the low 90s are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, a welcome respite from recent oppressive heat. Rain chances remain high, aided by a stalled front keeping Tropical Storm Idalia at bay. Conditions may be breezy with elevated seas. Temperatures in the low 90s are forecast for Thursday, a return to average temperatures and typical summertime patterns by Friday and Saturday.

Mississippi Senate advances its tax overhaul

Published

www.wxxv25.com – WXXV Staff – 2025-02-21 12:48:00

SUMMARY: The Senate Finance Committee has advanced legislation to reduce Mississippi’s income tax and grocery sales tax while increasing the gasoline tax. Republican senators argue these changes will stimulate the economy, proposing to decrease the flat 4% income tax to 2.99% over four years. Democrats, however, claim this disproportionately benefits corporations and harms low-income individuals. The Senate’s plan represents a $326 million net tax cut, less than the House’s $1.1 billion proposal, which seeks complete income tax elimination. The Senate also aims to lower the grocery tax from 7% to 5% by July 2026 and raise the gasoline tax to address highway maintenance funding.
