75% of Mississippi third graders pass reading test in 2024
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education announced that 75.7% of third graders passed the initial administration of the reading assessment for the 2023-24 school year. This percentage is similar to the pass rate for the previous year and higher than the rate before the pandemic. Students who do not pass the initial test have up to two more attempts to retest. The MDE is working to support instruction and resources aligned with the Science of Reading. Some students may qualify for exemptions to be promoted to fourth grade despite not passing the assessment.

SUMMARY: Two men, Frankie Williams and Michael Morrison, have been arrested for allegedly breaking into a home in Lee County, Mississippi, on September 21. They reportedly invaded the residence of a 66-year-old disabled man, demanding money and his phone under threat of assault. During the break-in, the suspects stole several debit and credit cards and electronic devices, which they used at various businesses in the area. Williams has been jailed with a bond set at $50,000, while Morrison awaits transport for his charges. Both face enhanced penalties due to the victim’s age and disability. Their cases will be presented to a grand jury in 2025.

SUMMARY: Effective October 1, 2024, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will see slight increases in maximum benefits amid ongoing inflation. New allotments will be $292 for one-person households and up to $1,756 for families of eight, with an additional $220 for each extra member. Unlike previous adjustments, this increase is relatively modest due to a lower inflation rate. Additionally, new work requirements will impact able-bodied adults without dependents aged 53 and 54; they must prove employment or training to qualify, similar to younger adults. Exemptions apply to certain groups, including veterans and the homeless.

SUMMARY: A 17-year-old named Jeremiah Wilson has been arrested and charged with murder following the shooting of 23-year-old Jaylen Larry at the Hazlehurst Softball Complex basketball court on October 23. The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. during a fight, after which Larry was shot multiple times and later died at the Copiah County Medical Center. Wilson turned himself in to authorities in Brookhaven. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
