6 Mississippi counties eligible for federal disaster assistance following April storms

SUMMARY: Federal assistance is now available for residents in six Mississippi counties affected by severe weather from April 8-11. Heavy rain and high-speed winds hit Hancock, Hinds, Humphreys, Madison, Neshoba, and Scott counties, causing 13 tornadoes, damaging hundreds of homes and buildings, and resulting in two fatalities. Governor Tate Reeves announced that FEMA has opened its Individual Assistance Program for those impacted. Assistance includes grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and low-cost loans. Residents can apply online or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA. An alternative number, 1-800-462-7585 (TTY), is available for the hearing and speech impaired.

Texas woman sentenced for hiring couple to kill Mississippi business rival

SUMMARY: Ashley Grayson, 35, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a murder-for-hire plot after a feud with a Southaven woman over online business criticism. Grayson, a former online course entrepreneur, offered a Memphis couple $20,000 to kill the Southaven woman, her ex-boyfriend, and a Texas woman. In September 2022, Grayson confirmed her intent in a recorded call, offering an additional $5,000 for a quick execution. The couple falsely claimed to have attempted the murders and received $10,000. Grayson was convicted in 2024. Her sentence includes 10 years in prison and three years of supervised release.
