SUMMARY: A coalition of 28 state attorneys general has requested the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in a legal case where Mexico blames U.S. gun manufacturers for cartel-related violence. The lawsuit, initially dismissed by a federal judge, was appealed by Mexico to the First Circuit, which sided with Mexico based on a broad interpretation of “proximate causation” under the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. The AGs argue that American manufacturers cannot be held responsible for cartel violence, which is linked to Mexican government policy. They contend Mexico’s claims lack legal basis and call for the reversal of the First Circuit’s ruling.

SUMMARY: U.S. job growth surged in December with an addition of 256,000 jobs, pushing unemployment down to 4.1%. This upbeat labor market contrasts sharply with expectations of recession and indicates the economy is rebounding post-COVID. Despite fewer jobs created than in previous years, average wages rose 3.9% year-over-year. While the economy maintains a solid pace, challenges remain, such as rising prices and labor shortages in various sectors, highlighting mixed sentiments among Americans regarding economic recovery.
