2024 Top of Class: Jefferson Davis County High School & Stringer Attendance Center
SUMMARY: Jefferson Davis County High School’s valedictorian is Kamora Hawthorne, Beta Club president and National Honor Society member, who plans to join the US Air Force to become a nurse. The salutatorian, Amber Bware, is a four-year superintendent scholar planning to work post-graduation while deciding on a field of study. Stringer Attendance Center’s valedictorian, Reagan Jones, an AP Chemistry award recipient with an ACT score of 28, plans to attend Jones College and later Ole Miss for biology. The salutatorian, Lakan Bradley, an All-State volleyball player, is studying psychology at Ole Miss with aims of becoming an occupational therapist. Congratulations to the top of the class of 2024!

SUMMARY: On this week’s episode of Blitz, Marissa Stubbs and Carlos Garcia recap an exciting lineup of high school football games. The game of the week featured Brandon Bulldogs defeating Madison Central Jaguars 21-7, highlighted by Tyson Robinson’s three touchdowns. Germantown Mavericks triumphed over Canton High 31-6, and Ridgeland Titans beat Florence Eagles 24-3. Canton Academy celebrated a 41-8 win against West Memphis Christian, and Hartfield Academy dominated Cathedral 49-0. The show’s standout player was Madison St. Joe’s Drew Wamble.

SUMMARY: Vicksburg fire officials report that all rail cars from the Thursday derailment at Malberry and Oak streets have been cleared, and rail traffic has resumed. A 50-year-old man sustained serious injuries during the incident and was transported to University Medical Center in Jackson. Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the derailment and are also trying to understand the circumstances surrounding the victim’s presence near the tracks at the time.

SUMMARY: Jackson City Council member Kenneth Stokes is advocating for the bus drivers of MV Transportation and their riders amid a strike. Stokes expressed concern over the strike’s devastating impact on riders who rely on the service, hindering their jobs and access to loved ones. He held a meeting at Cornerstone Baptist Church attended by drivers, riders, and the local union, but MV Transportation did not show up. The union is on strike due to MV’s failure to honor their collective bargaining agreement. Stokes emphasized the poor treatment of drivers and suggested reconsidering the city’s contract with MV if the situation does not improve.
