Jackson councilman calls for mayor to take leave of absence amid corruption investigation
SUMMARY: Amid a bribery investigation in Jackson, Mississippi, Councilman Kenneth Stokes is urging Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba to take a leave of absence and consider a plea deal after pleading not guilty to federal corruption charges. Stokes argues that the investigation, which has already led to indictments of four officials, is hindering city progress and eroding public trust. With a trial set for January 2025, Stokes believes Lumumba should prioritize his family’s well-being and cut a deal. The situation has strained relationships in the city, leading residents to relocate and prompting concerns about potential state intervention due to distrust in city leadership.
