19th annual Dance Like the Stars is August 3
SUMMARY: Denise Meek recalls fond memories of a New Albany gym, now the New Albany Boys and Girls Club, where she participated in Halloween activities as a child. Currently, she engages with kids in baseball and dance while preparing for “Dance Like the Stars 2024,” a fundraising event to support the club. Her goal is to raise at least $25,000 for the organization, which provides valuable mentoring and life skills to local youth. The event will take place on August 3 at the Cadence Bank Arena in Tupelo, co-hosted by WCBI’s Allie Martin. Tickets are available online.

SUMMARY: A bridge on U.S. 80 over the Pearl River, at the Hinds/Rankin County line in Jackson, Mississippi, will be closed for several months starting December 2, 2024, due to deck replacement by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). The closure is expected to last until summer 2025. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes, including I-20, I-55, State Street, and local roads. MDOT will install message boards to alert drivers about the upcoming closure.

SUMMARY: WREG is seeking records and bodycam footage of an incident in Southaven, Mississippi, where a police officer allegedly pointed a stun gun at 9-year-old Ahmar Anderson on Nov. 7. The officer mistook him for a robbery suspect, but Ahmar was wearing a purple and white letterman jacket, not matching the description. Ahmar’s mother, Shaquita Anderson Wade, believes he was targeted due to his size and race. Despite the incident, Ahmar has received support, including from police officers, and his mother hopes he feels safe calling the authorities in the future. The matter is under investigation, and footage is not yet available.
