19 AGs support Wisconsin Catholic Charities case | Wisconsin
SUMMARY: Nineteen state attorneys general have joined Catholic Charities Bureau of Superior in challenging a Wisconsin Supreme Court decision that classified its work as primarily secular, requiring it to pay into the state’s unemployment fund. The attorneys general, led by Ohio’s Dave Yost, filed an amicus brief arguing that if religious activities become secular upon nonreligious adoption, no religious practice would be safe from government regulation. Catholic Charities contends this ruling violates the First Amendment and undermines Catholic teachings. Other supportive briefs were submitted by the U.S. Department of Justice and various religious and legal scholars.
