Former NCCU football player becomes 2nd in world to receive total artificial heart
SUMMARY: Donovan Harbison, a 34-year-old educational consultant and father from North Carolina, became a Pioneer patient in a clinical trial at Duke University in August. Doctors implanted a total artificial heart (BIVACOR) after diagnosing him with heart failure due to a gene mutation. The device replaced all four heart chambers, providing enough support while he awaited a transplant. After ten days, he became healthy enough to receive a donor heart. Grateful for his second chance at life, Donovan encourages organ donation, acknowledging the medical innovation at Duke and expressing heartfelt gratitude to the donor’s family.
Alamance County resident and former NCCU lineman Donavon Harbison says Duke’s medical innovation is the reason he’s still here: “Beyond grateful.”

North Carolina parents, advocates weigh in as 14 states file lawsuits against TikTok
SUMMARY: Attorneys General from 14 states, including North Carolina’s Josh Stein, have filed lawsuits against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance, claiming the app harms children by being deliberately addictive. TikTok disputes these allegations, labeling them misleading and inaccurate. This action follows a similar lawsuit against Facebook last year. Parents express concerns about children’s social media use, emphasizing the need for education on navigating digital platforms. Advocates suggest that regulation should be coupled with educational initiatives to help young users navigate social media positively while avoiding its negative effects. TikTok asserts its commitment to safety features and constructive collaboration with authorities.
On Tuesday, there was a flurry of lawsuits filed in states across the country against social media giant TikTok and its parent company ByteDance. Attorneys General from 14 states — including Josh Stein — filed those suits individually, claiming the app has done irreversible harm to kids.
