NEW DETAILS: Accused Biloxi cop murderer not competent to stand trial
SUMMARY: Darien Atkinson, charged with the capital murder of Biloxi police officer Robert McKian, has been deemed not competent to stand trial. A judge’s ruling stems from evaluations indicating Atkinson’s mental health has worsened over the past two years, with psychosis and symptoms consistent with schizophrenia. He has been at a state mental hospital since March 2023, showing resistance to assessments and making bizarre claims about a supposed “Matrix” program. Despite disappointment from McKian’s loved ones, officials remain hopeful that charges will not be dismissed if Atkinson’s mental state improves, allowing for a future trial.

Atkinson will continue to be held in a maximum security building at the Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield.
