Did you know camels served during the Civil War?
SUMMARY: Summer camps at the YMCA in Vicksburg had a unique historical lesson featuring real camels, particularly thrilling first-time encounters for many, including counselor Taylor Stamps, initially scared by the size of the animal. The camels, owned by Douglas Baum, are used to teach children about the Civil War. Baum highlighted the curious tale of a camel that served as the mascot for the 43rd Mississippi Infantry, carrying musical instruments. This engaging method aims to capture kids' attention away from technology, potentially sparking an interest in history. Camp attendee Nia McDaniel found the encounter odd but memorable, reflecting the camp's success in blending education with excitement.
