NESHOBA COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW
SUMMARY: One of Mississippi's biggest summer events, the Neshoba County Fair, returns next month from July 26 through August 2nd. Day tickets are $30, and season tickets are $60. The fair will feature traditional events like horse racing, political speaking, flea markets, and concerts, along with new additions for enhanced safety and improved pedestrian access. This year marks the 135th anniversary of the fair. Organizers are expecting a large turnout and have worked on maintaining the grounds and grandstands for a more pleasant experience. New laws go into effect July 1
SUMMARY: Starting Monday, the jurisdiction of the CCID is significantly expanding, encompassing more areas in Jackson, including Jackson State University. On July 1st of next year, it will further expand to parts of Northeast Jackson. Almost half of the laws passed by the state legislature this year take effect on July 1st, impacting law enforcement with pay scale changes and the creation of new felonies, including those related to machine gun conversion devices, sexual extortion, and motor vehicle theft. A new 60-day presumptive Medicaid eligibility for pregnant women is also introduced. Additionally, public education funding will switch to the Mississippi Student Funding Formula, providing base and additional funds per student.
More than 170 new laws go into effect July 1 in Mississippi.

Former LPD officer found guilty of 2018 aggravated assault charge
SUMMARY: Former Laurel police officer Christopher Wade Robertson has been found guilty of aggravated assault for the 2018 beating of James Barnett, who fled a traffic stop and led officers on a chase. Robertson and another officer, Anthony Bryce Gilbert, were terminated after an internal investigation. Gilbert was found guilty of assault in 2022. Robertson's initial trial in 2023 ended in a mistrial. Today, Judge Stanley Sorri sentenced Robertson to seven years in prison, with two years to serve and five years on post-release supervision, concluding the trial in Covington County.
A former Laurel police officer accused of aggravated assault has been found guilty in a trial that concluded in Covington County Tuesday.
