Huge Saharan dust plume reaches parts of US
SUMMARY: A significant plume of Saharan dust is crossing the Atlantic, impacting parts of the U.S. ahead of July 4. Initially affecting Florida, the dust is expected to reach Texas and other Gulf states by Monday. Saharan dust, originating from the Sahara Desert, travels westward via Trade Winds, creating less favorable conditions for tropical cyclones and lowering humidity. While it blocks sunlight and affects air quality, the dust also delivers essential minerals to ecosystems. To mitigate its negative health impacts, people should stay indoors, use masks, and employ HEPA filters. Such dust events often result in striking sunrises and sunsets.
