Jackson City Council approves new housing development
SUMMARY: Councilman Kenneth Stokes opposes the Village at Livingston Place, Jackson's first new residential development in over 30 years, due to concerns about crime and residents' lack of input. Developers, led by attorney Robert Gibbs, have invested $2 million in infrastructure and plan to build 200 market-rate homes valued between $200,000 and $300,000 on a long-abandoned industrial site. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba supports the project for its potential to boost the local tax base. Despite developers' claims of community engagement, Stokes argues that neither local pastors nor residents support the project, criticizing the developers for not consulting the neighborhood.

Wastewater operators: Please keep sludge out of drains
SUMMARY: Water operators in the Pine Belt are cautioning residents about washing fats, oils, and grease (FOG) down drains, which is a leading cause of sewer issues. Wastewater Digest identifies items like butter and salad dressing as culprits. Delaney Dukes from WDS followed Glendale Utility District's James Pierce to inspect lift stations clogged with hardened FOG, which block sewer lines and create maintenance problems. This hardened grease can also clog home pipes, leading to costly plumbing repairs. Pierce urges the community to dispose of FOG in trash containers instead of drains to prevent such issues statewide.
