Former LPD officer found guilty of 2018 aggravated assault charge
SUMMARY: Former Laurel police officer Christopher Wade Robertson has been found guilty of aggravated assault for the 2018 beating of James Barnett, who fled a traffic stop and led officers on a chase. Robertson and another officer, Anthony Bryce Gilbert, were terminated after an internal investigation. Gilbert was found guilty of assault in 2022. Robertson's initial trial in 2023 ended in a mistrial. Today, Judge Stanley Sorri sentenced Robertson to seven years in prison, with two years to serve and five years on post-release supervision, concluding the trial in Covington County.
