2024 Juneteenth events in Jackson
SUMMARY: The Juneteenth holiday, celebrated for over 150 years, marks the emancipation of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, following the Civil War and Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Now a federal holiday since 2021, Juneteenth is widely recognized, featuring numerous events and public celebrations. In Jackson, Mississippi, several events are planned to honor Juneteenth: free admission to the Two Mississippi Museums, special tours at the Medgar Evers Home National Monument, an evening Juneteenth Jubilee, a concert celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and a night of performances by various artists. The free admission and educational events highlight Black empowerment and historical reflection.
